They just grow so fast!

October 29, 2005

My sister sent me a picture from her phone to mine yesterday, and because it came from a number that I didn’t recognize, I wasn’t immediately sure that it was from her. The only thing that tipped me off is that the little boy that I saw somewhat resembled my little nephew. I say somewhat resembled because the most recent pictures that I have of him are a year old, and you know how fast kids change.

It’s funny how when you don’t get to watch people grow up, they somehow stay stuck in your mind the way you want to remember them. This is why my 19 year old brother is still 10 in my eyes. And this is why the little boy in the picture looks like a little boy instead of my pudgy little twinkie. Still, he’s just so gosh darned cute, if I do get auntie’s bragging rights for a moment.

On my way home, I called my sister to tell her just how cute her not-so-much-of-a-baby-anymore is, and she told me that he’s going to be a brother. Even though I know they’ve been trying again for a few months now, it took her saying it four times for me to catch her drift. I blame the fact that I was still feeling caught up in the being old moment.

What’s even cooler is that she told me that if it wasn’t too much trouble, she would like me to be there in the delivery room with her when she has the baby. I wanted to cry, knowing that she asked me to be there. Not my mom or my dad, not my brother. Me. I told her I would do anything I had to do so that I could be there. As long as she stayed in labor for at least four hours, that is, since that’s about how long it takes me to get to Flagstaff by plane (hour and a half flight and two hour drive). So I’m going to be an auntie again. I’m so excited.

And hopefully, we can talk her out of naming the kid Ommuni. But that’s another story for another day.
